Event Data Recorders log data related to the airbag system performance such as the delta-v, time to fire, driver seat position, seat belt use and passenger classification status. Data is recorded when an impact exceeds the recording threshold. Data may be recorded when the impact is from the front, rear, side or rollover and in a non-deployment event.
EDR pre-crash data can provide useful information to evaluate unintended acceleration claims. The interpretation of the EDR report requires experience and an understanding of the operation of the EDR system. Our engineers have inspected over 100 vehicles with claims of unintended acceleration.
EDR pre-crash and crash data provides unbiased information about the events of a collision or rollover. Our experienced team of accident reconstruction experts will read out, evaluate and incorporate the EDR data into our accident reconstruction analysis.

Collision Research maintains the most current Bosch Crash Data Retrieval system. To date, it is the only commercially available readout tool for passenger cars.
In addition to EDR data, the vehicle diagnostic system can be scanned for diagnostic codes or monitored to confirm proper operation of vehicle system and sensors.
A significant portion of automobiles on the roads today are equipped with readable event data recorders, sometimes referred to as “Black Boxes.” Certain vehicle models have accessible data recorders dating back to the mid-1990s. These recorders can store a wide variety of data, including information on speed before and after impact, impact severity (Delta V and accelerations), restraint use, brake and throttle engagement before and after impact, airbag deployment, with the potential for additional parameters. NHTSA has mandated that all light duty passenger vehicles and trucks equipped with a downloadable electronic data recorder must meet specified minimum requirements for vehicles manufactured on or after September 1, 2012 (49 CFR 563), and thus an increasing number of vehicles involved in accidents will have a readable data recorder.
BRT personnel can access and download available data after a vehicle or heavy truck is involved in an accident. While some data retrieval services can merely download the data, BRT personnel are trained and certified to expertly analyze any nuances in the data, and analyze it in concert with traditional reconstruction techniques as required. BRT personnel are active in EDR research and have published several studies on this topic. Additionally, BRT personnel are qualified to train and certify others for crash data retrieval.
Data retrieved from these recorders can be a valuable portion of an accident reconstruction analysis, and are especially helpful in the early stages of any analysis, providing information regarding the strengths and weaknesses of a given investigation. We appreciate that access to vehicles can be limited and certain data is time sensitive, and we will meet your needs by responding quickly to your requests.

Is your car spying on you? Yes. As you drive down the road whether you know it or not, it is likely that there is a little Black Box called an Event Data Recorder that is watching you while you drive and is ready to save data that can be retrieved after a crash to help reconstruct the accident.
Event Data Recorders (EDR’s) have been widely deployed in new vehicles for over a decade and have been mandatory for passenger vehicles since 2012. So, a majority of the cars on the road nowadays have them.
EDR’s are similar to Flight Data Recorders in airplanes. Unlike the Black Box in an airplane, EDR’s in cars and trucks typically don’t record audio of what is happening in the vehicle. Instead, EDR’s record various data points regarding the operation of the vehicle in the time period just before the Event/Crash. Captured data includes speed, acceleration, braking, seat belt usage and airbag deployment.
Having the information from the EDR can be helpful to lawyers in Car and Truck Accident cases, so experts are often hired after serious accidents to download and preserve the data for use in the insurance claim process or in Court.
Airbag Event Data Recorder Location In Vehicle
Recently, I had a case where the driver of a car lost control, left the roadway and crashed. I represented the passenger who was seriously injured.
In that case the driver denied that he was at fault saying that his airbag improperly deployed Beore the crash rather than at the point of impact. In order to investigate his defense, we hired an expert to retrieve the data from the EDR. The EDR kept data regarding the timing of airbag deployment and disproved his claim. The EDR confirmed that the airbag deployed properly just milliseconds After the crash.
Black Box/Event Data Recorder technology can be very useful in reconstructing what happened in car accidents and will become very common evidence used in Court by lawyers in serious Car and Truck Accident cases.
